The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan: Ugh, I can't even think about this book without getting teary eyed. A book about death and zombies, you know you are going to face some challenges. I didn't expect it to destroy my heart. It did -- and I loved it.
Delirium by Lauren Oliver: If you've read it, you know exactly what I mean. If you haven't read it, prepare your tissue box for the last fifty pages.
Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver: Her books torture me. This story is beautiful and sad. My heart was destroyed for days.
Specials by Scott Westerfeld: Ugh, Zane!
The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater: This book did such an amazing job of completely pulling me into the world and story. It was really hard to leave.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling: Need I explain? Chapter 1 alone shattered my heart.
My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult: I'm not a huge Jodi fan, but this book had me sobbing.
Anything Cassandra Clare: It is like she writes her book with one goal -- to batter our hearts and bruise our souls. Evil but I love it.
Blood Promise by Richelle Mead: This series is torture. But this book in particular -- I can't even use words.
I'm sorry. My heart is too beaten and broken to think of a 10th pick this week. I have to go stare at pictures of butterflies and rainbows to help put my broken pieces back together!

On the outside, everything looks perfect in Rhonda's world but at home Rhonda has to deal with a manipulative father who keeps her mentally ill mother hooked on pharmaceuticals. The only reliable person in Rhonda's life is her family's Mexican yardman, Jesus. But when the INS deports Jesus's back to his home state of Oaxaca, Rhonda is left alone with her increasingly painful family situation.
Determined to find her friend Jesus, Rhonda seizes an opportunity to run away during a camping trip with friends. She swims to the Mexican side of the Rio Grande and makes her way to the border town of Boquillas, Mexico. There a peyote-addled bartender convinces her she won't be safe traveling alone into the country's interior. So with the bartender's help, Rhonda cuts her hair and assumes the identity of a Mexican boy named Angel. She then sets off on a burro across the desert to look for Jesus.

When it comes to picking books I have three main criteria: 1. YA, 2. Romance in some fashion and 3. Swoonworthy boys. I don't often choose books that are outside of my comfort zone. Just like I always catch the same el every morning, walk the same route to work each day, and always end my texts with periods. How does this relate to The Earthquake Machine? It relates because based on the description of this book, my first response was, nah, I should read Anna and the French Kiss again. I like that book. But, I gave it a shot. Consensus? I liked it. I really liked it.

Where this book blew me away was the writing. Lowry's writing style is so beautiful and textured, describing otherwise uncomfortable scenes with poeticism that simultaneously enriches and heightens the scene. She has a way with words and a way of conveying such a colorful array of emotion.

It is a powerful story. Rhonda is a young girl dealing with very real issues. She finds herself faced with the decision to either kill herself or run away. In a way, she does both. She runs away and abandons the uncomfortable, scared girl on the other side of the border. Then what follows is an intense story about a girl on the path to discovering herself. I admire Rhonda. She is brave despite her brokenness. And I think her journey speaks volumes to girls who are lost in their own skins. Sometimes we feel helpless to change ourselves, but all it takes is a little courage and faith.

Okay, okay, about a third of the way in I was itching for the love story. What I can I say? I like the romance (and the kissing)! There is some kissing, but this is not a love story. And it shouldn't be. But because of this lack of love story, for me personally, I had to kind of kick myself to get through the half way point. I made it and am glad I did.

One disclaimer. This book is considered Young Adult, but even as a 20+ adult, I found some of the themes and scenes to be mature. It is a growing story that is beautifully done, but not a light weight read.

Overall, though this book doesn't fall into my comfort zone, I can still attest for what a beautiful, powerful and strong story this is. Though I will warn you of the following. You will be uncomfortable. You will cry. And you will grow. But as is life. It is full of moments where we want to run the other way or weep. In the end, we have a choice to keep going and face these difficult moments so that we can grow.

Q: What would your prefer: reading your favorite book over and over again until you got sick of it OR reading 100s of mediocre books? And why?

Answer:
This is a tough one!
My fav book is East of Eden by John Steinbeck, and I could easily read it over and over. It is complex and long enough that it would take me a while to get bored. But...sometimes mediocre books are worth reading. I have a long list of "mediocre" books that even though they weren't that great, I still really enjoyed them.
So...
My final answer is 100s of mediocre books. I love my fav book but wouldn't want to read it until I hate it. And you never know what treasures you might discover amongst the mediocrity.

Book Review - Graffiti Moon

Instead, Lucy's stuck at a party with Ed, the guy she's managed to avoid since the most awkward date of her life. But when Ed tells her he knows where to find Shadow, they're suddenly on an all-night search around the city. And what Lucy can't see is the one thing that's right before her eyes.

Graffiti Moon is awesome. That seems about the only word I can think of to properly say how I feel about this book. The characters, the story, the graffiti—all of it—awesome.

Why you ask?

For starters, the characters are all incredibly clever. I love characters that say things well. Lucy, Ed and the whole crew say things well. They are quick, witty and endearing. An incredible combination that had me hooked from page one. The whole book I could not stop thinking—man do I wish I were clever like that. And then, ugh, I wish I could mimic an Australian accent in my head. And, can these people please be my friends!?

“So it’s the cat’s fault,” I said. “If only we had a cat.” She rolled her eyes. “It’s no one’s fault. There’s no fault. We’re staying married. Not everyone lives like the dream you have in your head.” That did not comfort me. (Lucy -- Graffiti Moon by Cath Crowley)

I like characters worth liking, characters that draw you into their story in one paragraph. I found myself immediately drawn to both Lucy and Ed. They are of the odd sort and I LOVE them. Written in multiple perspectives, we are given insights that help heighten the story and drive the tension between the characters. The book only takes place over one night, but shows a backward glance at who these people are. Their stories are full of depth and heart, turning them from book characters to real images of people. Turning them from what we hope them to be into who they really are.

Graffiti Moon is not packed with action, but it never lags and never leaves you bored. What this story gives the reader is a unique portrayal of art, recognition of the impact that people can have in a life, and the importance of seeing the truth instead of a façade.

There are two things I look for in a book. A good love story that underlies the main plot and swoon worthy men. Strong and silent. Snarky and BA. If a book manages a great male character with a wounded past -- I just know it is the book for me!

Why I am waiting... I had the terrific opportunitiy to take my first writing class ever with Molly at Story Studio in Chicago this past fall. It was fantastic! She is a wonderful person and a fantastic teacher. I can only imagine what an incredible writer she must be! After all, she taught me everything I know. Well, almost everything. All of that aside, I am also eager for this book because the plot sounds amazing, and I just love this cover.

Top Ten Books For a Book Club

As I stated in a recent post, my friends and I have recently embarked upon our first book club, BYOB&B. So, I am excited about this top ten to receive some feedback from other bloggers about which books they would recommend.

As a fan of YA, I tend to not know many books that would be book club worthy. Not that YA books aren't book club worthy; they just would require a very special/genre specific book club. Thus, my list is going to be a BOOK CLUB FOR THE YOUNG ADULT.

1. The Statistical Probaiblity of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. SmithWhy? Because I cannot get enough of this book. And I needed another plug for my giveaway -- Win SPOLAFS here! But, for real. This book is not just for the YA, it is for any girl who has dreams of finding love at first sight. Yet, it is the moments of growing up and witnessing your life change that resonate.

2. The Book Thief by Marcus ZusakI confess. I have yet to read this book, but as it is my current book club book, I figure it must make a great one. I have heard wonderful things about this book and am very excited to read it.

3. The Hunger Games by Suzanne CollinsI have heard grown-up boys say that they love this book and that the YA genre part of it shouldn't let anybody be deterred. I agree. Love, love, love this series.

4. The Outsiders by S.E. HintonI loved this book in school. And I really did not like reading for school. So the fact I read and finished this one is a true testament to how great it is.

5. To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper LeeAnother book read for school that I actually finished. I guess you could say I liked any classic that could fall into the YA genre. This story is so meaningful and beautiful.

6. Before I Die by Jenny DownhamThis book has been waiting for me on my shelf for months. I want to read it. Really and truly. It just seems so sad that I never pick it up. But without actually having read it, I would believe it would have a great amount of themes and messages for any reader to take away.

7. Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver Oh this book. It tortured me. I loved it way more than I expected to. I would make my book club read this if we didn't have a rule about already having read the books.

8. If I Stay by Gayle Foreman Now, I have read this book. And it did a number on my heart.

9. Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins

This is just a cute and wonderful book. The characters are poignant and the story is adorable.

10. Divergent by Veronica RothBecause I live in Chicago and if I were to make my book club read any dystopian novel I think they would appreciate this one that is set in our great city.

Book Review - Amy and Roger's Epic Detour

Amy Curry thinks her life sucks. Her mom decides to move from California to Connecticut to start anew—just in time for Amy's senior year. Her dad recently died in a car accident. So Amy embarks on a road trip to escape from it all, driving cross-country from the home she's always known toward her new life. Joining Amy on the road trip is Roger, the son of Amy's mother's old friend. Amy hasn’t seen him in years, and she is less than thrilled to be driving across the country with a guy she barely knows. So she's surprised to find that she is developing a crush on him. At the same time, she’s coming to terms with her father’s death and how to put her own life back together after the accident. Told in traditional narrative as well as scraps from the road—diner napkins, motel receipts, postcards—this is the story of one girl's journey to find herself. (Goodreads summary)

This book is so...normal. And I mean that in the best possible way.

Often times a book will try to encompass a normal life but the acts and characters won't reflect the story and situation. However, this book is perfect. Both Amy and Roger act their age and behave appropriately given their situation and stories.

What I love about this book is the flow and pacing. Matson doesn't rush us through the journey, but she takes snapshots of moments that ultimately tie into the big picture. She hones in on some and zooms out on others. As a result, we are just an additional passenger along for the ride.

In the wake of a tragedy, Amy's family has fallen apart. They don't know how to cope with the loss of her father and as a result, they have started to lose sight of each other. Amy starts the journey as a shell of a human being. She often references to an alter ego, Amy!, a girl who would know exactly what to do in any situation. But regular Amy is at a loss. And that makes her raw, real and relatable. Matson does a great job of painting Amy. We want to help her, but as she does with others, she holds us at arm's length. She keeps half of the story from us and only reveals it as she herself begins to come to terms with the details. Ultimately, as her shell begins to crack and she begins to transform, Amy starts to reveal more of herself. And we get to know her on this journey.

Roger. Oh so adorable Roger. Or Magellan as he is commonly known at school. Here is reason number one why I like Roger: he is so nice. He is patient, kind, and low key. Even with his own backstory playing out, he never gets too rattled. He is a stable driving companion, and he eases some of the stress on the page. Here is reason number two why I like Roger: his playlists. Dude has stellar taste in music. I would love to ride in his car.

I love this book because of all of the stops, restaurants, and people they encounter along their detour. The title says it is an Epic Detour. I expected mishaps, shenanigans and flat tires. That doesn't happen. The detour is epic because it is life changing. The people that Amy and Roger meet along the way impact each of them, leaving lasting impressions. What is epic about this detour are the small moments of trying a new restaurant like Chik-Fil-A, listening and liking someone else's music, and meeting random people who wind up providing transformation.

At the end, what is found in Amy and Roger's Epic Detour is a beautiful story that teaches us that in the aftermath of a life changing tragedy, someone can never really move on, but they can move forward. We've all had those moments where we felt like our entire world was turned upside down and then felt alone. This story starts us at that place and then sends us on an Epic Detour to find out what would happen if we stopped hiding and allowed ourselves to explore the world.

Hi there. I took somewhat of a blogging hiatus over the weekend to focus more of my attention on writing. I was productive--finally. Usually when I fall out of writing for a bit, I start a new project. The project tends to be one I don't plan to go anywhere, but I write it in hopes that it will jostle my creativity and reawaken the writing passion. It helped. I was able to write over 5,000 words this weekend, which felt really good.

But...in Academy Award related news...I have now viewed 5 out of 9 of the Best Picture films.

This is a charming movie about an American writer (Wilson) in Paris with his snotty fiance (McAdams). Whereas she wants to spend the whole time riding in taxis and shopping at American stores, he wants to see more than tourist traps. He wants to experience a different, more romantic -- 1920s-esque -- side of Paris. When he is picked up one night by an old-fashioned car, he is transported to a different time and era where he meets the likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and Picasso.

This world set in Paris in the 1920s seems so idyllic. The great authors, the music, the flappers... For a fan of classics such as The Great Gatsby and Farewell to Arms, this movie will resonate with you. Definitely a Woody Allen film, with the customary quick, informal conversations and strange, offbeat characters. Some characters are lovable and others loathable. Overall, the movie as a whole is enchanting, humorous, and witty.

The music and the settings (Paris today and Paris of the past) drive this movie. It is romantic and rich. It makes you want to go and experience Paris -- a city full of art, music, and culture.

My favorite part: The 1920s. This movie has a message that people will always wish for a time in the past -- a man from 2011 wanting to live in the 1920s, while the girl from the 1920s wishes for the 1890s -- I enjoy the message that it isn't about the when but about what you do with where you are. Sometimes nostalgia can keep us trapped in the past where we don't belong. However, the 1920s still seemed so fun! The cusp of a world beginning to transform.

Based on the bestselling novel by Kathryn Stockett, this movie and book alike are beautiful and well done. This story addresses an important part of our country's history with a grace and humor that draws in the viewer and then hooks them. It is a movie (book) the presents its audience with a new perspective.

It is the story of African American maids who silently bear the mistreatment by their employers until a young woman comes along offering to help them tell their story. Skeeter (Stone) wants to be a writer and while at her friend's house, she discovers a topic that is heavy on her heart but dangerous to embark on. Aibileen (Davis), a maid, agrees to discuss with Skeeter what it is like for the help in 1960s Mississippi. The story begins to unfold as Skeeter and Aibileen discuss the mistreatment of the hired help and inspire others to speak up as well.

The Help is full of rich, beautiful and strong characters. Every one of them will take their turn breaking your heart, while making you laugh. This movie (book) is less about the cinematic elements and more about the heart of the characters and the moral of the story.

My favorite part: I love the relationship between Minny (Spener), one of the maids, and Celia Foote. Minny was a little rough around the edges. She was too honest for a maid and it had led her to some trouble and job losses. After which, she finds herself at the home of Johnny and Celia Foote. Celia is a rare breed. As beautiful as she is vapid, but extraordinarily kind.

This book would make a perfect movie. The story is simple enough that it could easily be fit into a two hour time frame and manage to capture all of the important and worthwhile moments. The story is rich with emotion; a movie portrayal (if cast correctly) could easily capture its essence. The plot is adorably heart-breaking and heart-warming. The characters are so darn charming. Some of them even have lovely British accents. Not to mention that the main location is both an airport and London. Perfect settings for a great movie.

Because of the cover that I just oh-so-adore, I think this movie could be interesting in black and white. Except for small accents of color.

A Month of Movies and Mania

The Academy Awards

Usually, on the night of the Academy Awards, I host a party and print out a ballot for each of my guests. We cast our votes then follow along with the program. I have found this makes people actually care who wins such awards as Art Direction and Documentary Short. My guests enjoy the competition. They like having an investment. And I like having the company on my all time favorite night of the year!

Last year, I managed to watch all of the movies nominated for Best Picture. It was exhilarating watching all of those different types of films--pretending like I was an extreme movie buff!

Unfortunately, seeing every movie is not always possible. Thus, I shall provide my high quality insights on the films nominated this year.

Now, I will warn you. I am a pro. I took a film class in college, which pretty much means I am a film expert. Yup. I know everything there is to know about long-shots, filtered lighting, and you know -- other film related things.

Okay, maybe I am not a pro. I don't really know how to decipher different elements, but I can tell when I've enjoyed a movie and when it is noticeably well made. Which means, I will consult some of the real movie buffs to give more insight then, I didn't like this movie because there was no love story. But seriously, how can a movie be good without any love story? I'll tell you...

The story of Daniel and Luce is not necessarily everyone’s favorite. I however fell in love with the Fallen Series this past summer and have since been eagerly awaiting Rapture, the fourth and final book in the saga. Thankfully, the dreadful waiting period has been graced with an in between book, Fallen In Love, a compilation of four love stories of some of our favorite characters in this series. As a fan of these books, I thoroughly enjoyed this addition.

Everyone loves a good romance and Daniel and Luce’s love is pretty epic. It appropriately dominates the focus of the series; however, as we follow their love, one can’t help but wonder about the stories of the other characters. Fortunately, Lauren Kate was well aware that us fans would enjoy reading more!

For me, this book does not further the series, but it is a positive addition nonetheless. I was very glad to see that Miles was not left to wallow after Luce but given his own little love story. And as the spunky sidekick, Shelby was definitely worthy of his affection. They were charming and in the series of bizarre occurrences, refreshingly normal. It was cute to see how their story progressed while Daniel and Luce were busy chasing the past. And as the loveable fallen angels from opposite sides, I enjoyed learning more about Roland’s past and Arrianne’s.

Overall, this is an adorable quartet of love stories. Appropriately coined a book for Valentine’s Day, if you are looking for a simple and quick love story, this is the book for you. It won’t blow you away, but it will warm your heart.

Hmm...the craziest thing I have ever done for a book...good question?

I suppose I would say the craziest thing I have done for a book/books, was subject myself to the closing sale at Border's on State Street in Chicago. I am talking hordes of people stampeding their way through the shelves. And I willingly chose to go just to see what YA book treasures were left to be excavated. I went once. I went twice. And then I went a third time (thrice?). It was worth it. I found it so sad that such a mammoth store was closing that I just needed to make sure I walked out of there with as many books as I could!

The Statistical Probability of Finding Love in a Coffee Shop

Inspired by The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith.
And based on semi-true events.

She will come in one evening wearing a gray hat. The coffee shop will be full. People coming and going. Some might stop to notice the girl with the gray hat sitting alone. Most will be in a rush or a slow daze. They will only stop long enough to drink their coffee. Or perhaps spend all evening staring at a computer screen or reading a really good book. Either way, they will walk out of there completely unaware of the story that is beginning to unfold.

He will be there, greeting people warmly as they walk in the door and asking them if they are staying warm. He alone will create a welcome environment; one that people are unaware is because of him. She will notice him immediately. His disheveled hair and beat up sneakers will catch her eye and his adorable smile will hold it.

Other than her ordering a Mexican hot chocolate and him telling her to stay warm, the two will say nothing to each other. But she will think about him and he will be grateful for the large tip that the girl in the gray hat left. And she will return the next night and the night after that.

The girl will walk through the door and the boy will greet her like any other. Both will know that when they say hello and meet each other's gaze that they are saying more than hi. He will have thought about the way she sat, twirling her hair around her finger and the way she always orders a Mexican Hot Chocolate. She will think of the way he asked her what her favorite word is and the way he confided in her that he was feeling ornery. Their hello will be like a secret spoken between best friends who are really just two strangers.

He will begin to guess the exact time she will walk through the door. Instead of waiting to be seated, she will walk in take the table that he will start to reserve for only her. Without ordering, he will walk over with her drink, remembering to go light on the whipped cream. One day, he will bring her a complimentary piece of cake.

She will stop coming on Wednesdays, his only night off. When they both return on Thursday evening, she will ask him how he spent his night of freedom. And he will assume she didn't come either, asking her in return what she did instead.

Soon, he will know what she does for a job. And she will know how he spends his days. She will tell him about her family. He will skirt the issue of his.

She will make the evening of work bearable for him. And he will make the day of work unbearable for her.

He will begin to spend less time talking with the other customers and forget to bring people their drinks, his mind too focused on the girl in the gray hat. She will start to notice the way he watches her as he counts a man's change five times before ultimately getting it wrong.

She will start to read the books he suggests and he will smile when he sees her furrow her brow halfway through The Brothers Karmazov as she reaches his favorite part. He will ask her about it and her cheeks will redden as she tells him how much she loved it, thanking him for the suggestion even though she has read it twice.

He will play her favorite band on the loud speakers, singing along with the chorus, always off key even though he actually has a nice singing voice.

She will wonder what he is like outside the coffee shop. Who is he when he is not working? He will wonder the same. Who is this girl who spends all of her time in the coffee shop that until she showed up, he hated?

Then one evening, she won't be there. He will wait for her. He will seat people anywhere but her table. But she won't come. He will expect her the next day, but she won't be there. And on the third day, he will give someone her table. It won't be until the fourth night that he will wonder if she is gone. He will dread work again and the hours that not only are spent waiting on grumpy people but without her. He will wonder if he will ever see her again.

A week later, she will come back. Her hair will be lighter and her cheeks red from sun. He will have already given up her table but will seat her quickly at another. She will tell him that she went to Florida with her brother and his wife. They visited Harry Potter World and he will smile as he makes a joke about her belonging in Hufflepuff even though he really thinks she belongs in Gryffindor. She will smile at his smile, having missed him every day she was gone.

I wondered if you had found a new place to get your hot chocolate, he will say. To which she will respond somewhat boldly, I don't come here for the hot chocolate. She will have realized while away that she missed him enough to risk the bold statements.

It will be the phrase to start it all.

The next night she will patiently wait as he ushers people out quickly at closing. Before she begins to pack up her own bag, he will ask if she wants to get a drink at the bar across the street. She will check her watchless wrist as she bites her lip to hide the grin then nod in agreement.

He will try to clean up as quickly as he can. His coworker noting the rushed look on his face will offer to close down and he will agree even though he knows this employee will take cash from the register.

They will go across the street and sit at a booth in a dark corner. At first, neither will say anything. They have never seen each other anywhere but the coffee shop and suddenly it will seem that the magic is lost.

But when he asks her what she wants, she will laugh at the familiarity of it. Then she will get up and ask the same of him. Tonight, I take your order, she will say.

They will smile at each other with equal amounts of nerves and amusement. But both will see the look in the other's eyes. A look they are sure matches their own. He will love the ambiguous color of her eyes and she will fall for the one dimple in his left cheek. They will cover nothing important yet have the best conversation of their lives. She will tell him about all of her big, illogical dreams. And he will tell her something he has never told anyone.

At some point, he will reach across the table and push a stray hair behind her ear. Her leg will accidentally brush up against his and when she moves hers away, his will move so that they touch again. By the time that they leave and he walks her home, it will seem natural for him to take her hand and her fingers to entwine with his. But once she reaches her door and pulls back, her keys instead of his hand now occupying her cold fingers, neither will know what to do next.

Well, I guess I will see you tomorrow, he will say with a question in his voice. She will nod, disappointed, but unlock her door and walk in with one last wave. Once inside, the memories from the night will replay in her head. And she will realize she didn't even give him her number. There is always tomorrow in their coffee shop. She will worry that things will be different now.

As she considers this, the buzzer will ring and she will go to answer it. On the other side of the door, he will be waiting. Pacing back and forth. She will open the door and he will hold up a gray hat with a sheepish grin.

Thanks, she will say, letting her fingers touch his as she takes that hat from his hands. His smile will slip from his face as he stares at her. Before she can go back inside, he will pull her to him and kiss her. In that moment, all of the nights she will have spent deciding what to wear and the nights he made himself come to work instead of quitting, will have been worth it.

Life is a series of moments that all begin with a simple choice.

Tonight, he will cover someone's shift after they get a flat tire on the way to work.

And when she heads out the door, she will realize it is cold and decide to wear her gray hat.

And that is where their story will begin.

I thoroughly enjoy a good love story. So, the statistical probability that I would like this book was 99.9%. And oh dear did I love it. This book is so many shades of good. I think it can best be described in the tears that were my constant reading companion. This book (the story and the characters) took root in my heart and forced the tears to help it grow. So not fair. After I finished the last page, Baby Bear (the little girl I nanny), looked at me and asked "Are you happy or sad?" To which I said as I clung to her, "Oh Baby Bear, I am so beautifully and painfully both."

For all of us romantics out there, this book knows just where to hit us. On an airplane, flying to England, with an adorable Brit -- named Oliver nonetheless. Who doesn't dream of this scenario? He is cute. He is funny. He is chivalrous. He has powder from a donut on his shirt and mustard on his chin. In one word--endearing. I nearly booked a flight to London and planned to miss it by four minutes just to see how good the statistical probability of me recreating this scenario might be.

The romance that blooms between Hadley and Oliver is what the title tells us to expect. What we don't come prepared for are all of the emotions of loss and betrayal that center around Hadley's reservations and embitterment about her father's new marriage. The father/daughter relationship in this book was almost too much to bear. As a reader, we empathize with Hadley. We are right there with her through every hard and worthwhile moment. It was these moments that had my heart aching and my eyes brimming with tears.

No matter what note you relate to Hadley on, the element of moving on and a new stage in life can resonate with all of us. Nostalgia--such a beautiful ache.

I loved every minute of this heartfelt novel. (Rating 5/5)

My LOVE for this adorable series is astronomical. Seriously. I find it absolutely adorable, quick and funny. Thus, I cannot wait to find out what happens on Sophie Mercer's very wonderful adventure. Not to forget to mention how much I love Archer Cross.

Top Five Books I recommend to people who do not read that often.

I have a friend, known as Seashell, who until recently had never finished a book. So when I think about recommending books to non-readers, I always think about what I would tell her to read. Now she is an avid reader. All it took were a select few books to make her realize what a fantastic place the book world can be.

1. Twilight Saga by Stephanie Meyer

Twilight is the first book that Seashell read all the way through. And I think that says a lot about this series. Okay, it blew up way, way too big. But, there is something in this series that I think speaks to a lot of non-readers. It is a simple story with simple writing but an ocean full of emotions. It is a journey that captivates the reader. Seashell is proof. Twilight is a must read for non-readers.

2. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Another series turned movie and thus the blow up. All of my friends are reading it. And though I hate it when people only read a book because it is "trendy," I also love that this fantastic series is generating the hype it deserves. It led the way for Dystopian novels. I think it is a great first book for people to recognize this wonderful genre.

3. The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks

This is another Seashell suggestion. Nicholas Sparks' novels. They are simple, romantic stories. And The Notebook is the absolute best chick-lit. Plus, people probably have already seen the movie, thus can easily picture Ryan Gosling as the beautiful Noah.

4. Harry Potter by J.K Rowling

Harry Potter is one of those series that people kind of gawk at if they were not a part of the initial craze. But get them to start the series and they will be addicted. I have not met anyone who has said, oh I didn't like Harry Potter. I would venture to say this is not possible. And if you can prove me wrong, don't. I want to live in this fantasy world where people only find Harry Potter fantastic. Because anyone who doesn't, well... they don't exist to me.

5. Uglies Trilogy by Scott Westerfeld
I haven't actually recommended this series to very many people--not yet anyway. But of the dystopians out there, I think this is a great one to start with. It is such a genius series. The characters and world are so well depicted that it helps a non-reader easily picture the world.

Book Review - Half-Blood

Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. I had heard this book was similar to The Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead. And well, yeah, they are practically twins. It is like taking The Vampire Academy and instead of using the word vampire replacing it with gods.

That being said -- if something isn't broken, don't fix it!

I absolutely adore The Vampire Academy, which led to me absolutely adoring Half-Blood. It is quick paced, entertaining, and exciting. The characters are fun and likable. Alex is spunky, sassy and endearing. Aiden is adorably swoon-worthy. The strong, silent type that I am totally in love with these days. Seth is absolutely god-like. And there are a few twists. Somewhat predictable, but not every book needs to be a labyrinth of hidden secrets. But Arementrout managed to get my blood pumping and my heart racing.

Overall, though this book is like my favorite vampire series or rather since it is, I loved it. I throughly enjoyed every minute I spent reading it instead of being productive. For fans of Rose and Dimitry's story in The Vampire Academy, this is the book for you. Don't be deterred by the similarities; they are there, but they are worth loving again. And in the end, Half-blood is its own story. A story worth the incredibly addicting adventure.

Legend. I liked it. I really, really liked it.

Sometimes, it is so great to read a book that you have absolutely no expectations for. It gives a freedom to open the pages and just let the story and characters define themselves. I didn't know what to expect from this book and what I found was really enjoyable. And really addicting. It is a quick paced story that has you hooked from chapter one. It never lags, leaving no place to put it down.

Written in two perspectives, we are given two sides of the story. They are equally captivating and endearing.

Day is a young boy wanted for creating havoc in the republic and for breaking unfair laws. He is sweet, caring and a trouble maker. His love for his family guides all of his actions and it gives him the best reason to fight and struggle against the society. He is just awesome. Deft and capable, he is a menace to society that makes you root for his success. June is a prodigy. She is smart, honorable and a fighter. Unlike Day, she supports the Republic. But like Day, her actions are defined by her love for her family.

As a fan of dystopians, this book definitely satisfies. The writing is technical and controlled. It is not filled with poetic language but analytical and scientific, appropriate for the story that is told. The characters are believable and either appropriately likable or hatable. Marie Lu said that Legend is a modern day take on the story of Les Miserables. The story of when a righteous person meets a notorious criminal and the relationship that exists between the two in an unfair world.

Overall -- a very enjoyable, fast, and fascinating book.

You know that feeling you get after listening to Celine Dion's My Heart Will Go On? Do you need to listen to it to understand what I mean? Okay...

The moment I hear the first four notes of this ballad, I am immediately drawn back to fifth grade when I sat in the theater and watched this movie for the third time. Naively, I believed that if only I hoped with enough passion, the story would end differently. Now 20+ viewings of this movie later, my emotions are still sent into an extreme whirl of insanity.

Anyway, Celine Dion was clearly not referring to Pandemonium; if she was, the song would be called, My Heart Will Not Go On. Because my heart is currently laying at my feet. It exploded out of my chest after reading this book.

Lauren Oliver is a true master of words and a true manipulator of emotions! I haven't read a book of hers (Liesl & Po, Before I Fall, and Delirium) where my heart wasn’t placed on a string and tossed around like a yo-yo. And if I should ever not feel my heart ripped out and my stomach bleeding while reading one of her beautiful stories, one of two things might have happened. Either I am not who I pretend to be as someone has used the polly juice potion and has taken over my life -- or -- I will have a three pronged scar below my ear. An indication that I was forced to undergo the Deliria cure and can no longer feel strong emotions.

Fortunately, neither of these things are true.

Opening Pandemonium, I had to take a few deep breaths before I even read the first word--my heart was already beating too fast. I didn't fully know what I was in store for, but I had a good sense that it would drive me crazy and perhaps result in a few torn book pages (definitely achieved both). What I didn't plan for was the constant tears in my eyes, the nauseous feeling of anticipation, and rat people.

To put it mildly, I loved this book. To put it strongly, I have never loved a book I hated so much in my whole life. It is everything I expect out of Lauren Oliver and exactly what I would hope as a follow up to a book that still makes me cry.

Pandemonium is a whole other ball game than Delirium. It is packed with action, desperation and blood. More of a story of survival than a story of love, but still filled with those incredible, pulsating emotions.

I literally threw this book across the room at the last page. Literally. Not even kidding. It got a bit crinkled.

Break my heart, torture my soul, and drag me across the ground kicking and screaming. My heart will not go on. It has stopped and will remain in this state until the third book provides some solace.

Is there anything better than showing up to work on a Monday morning and your boss (in my case, a 2 yr old) informs you that you have the next day off?

Answer -- no.

There is nothing better than that. It means several things. One, that when you return to work on Wednesday, it is like you only have a three day work week. Two, you have a whole day to yourself. A whole day, while other people are at work, to do whatever it is you want/need to do. I usually go to Starbucks and spend the whole day writing.

Over the past few weeks, I have been scatter brained when it comes to my writing. I am at that difficult place in all of my WIPs where I have reached the crucial moment where every decision I need to make seems too hefty. And instead of listening to my characters, I start over thinking everything and putting too much pressure on myself and them.

No, no, no -- the reader will see that coming. Come on Maxx -- you have got to have a better come back than that. Really -- that is your motivation?!

As a result, I hit a block and stop altogether. Nothing happens. They are left in limbo while I watch late night sitcoms and go on Pinterest. And honestly -- that is not fair to anyone.

Now, I've decided to get back on the path. Take the weight off my shoulders (and theirs). And continue to write the story for the fun of it. And because really, I just need to see where it goes.

I've read a lot of wonderful writing advice lately that I am trying to keep in the back of my mind as I go along.

Kiersten White, author of Paranormalcy and Supernaturally, said on her blog -- Kiersten Writes

Yes: Make publishing a goal if it is important to you.
No: Don't let being published determine your worth as a writer. Always, always, always keep the love of writing first and foremost. If you let the pursuit of publication kill your love of writing, not even a book deal with salvage it. We write because we love to, because we need to. We pursue publication with this firmly in mind, knowing that even if it never happens our writing still has value.

When people ask what you do, you need to tell them, “I am an author” or “I am a writer.” Even if you don’t have your book finished. This is going to sting. I love what they both say. When people ask what I do, with a grimace I usually say, I'm a nanny. And then sometimes I follow that up with and I am trying to write books. Usually mumbled. Everything in my response says I am not serious about it. I have no passion for it. Which is a lie. I most definitely do. But I'm hiding that passion under a bushel. NO!

The question for myself and for writers alike -- why are we writing?

For me -- I am writing for the same reason that I read. Because I love to escape into those magical worlds of imagination. Whether a world in the future, a world with fallen angels, or simply a romance in my own world -- what is so great about them all, is the adventure one can go on just by reading the words.

It isn't about, "Oh this is the top selling book and the best paid author. I'm totally going to read their book because Oprah says it is good." It isn't about, "I am going to write about mermaids because they are super trendy and are sure to get me published." It isn't about, "I'm quitting because this book will never be a NYT bestseller."

It isn't about doubt and jealousy and trends and popularity. It is about the enjoyment you get when you read a sentence that makes your jaw drop below your knees and your heart to catapult out of your chest.

It isn't about whether you have a huge vocabulary and always know where to put your commas (ahem, I never know where to put my commas). It is about the story you tell. Or the story you read.

So...I am taking that backpack full of bricks and leaving it at the start of the trail. From here on out, all I need is my heart, my mind, and my soul. I am leaving the pressure and the doubt behind. And bringing with me the passion, the joy and of course -- my imagination.

Top Ten Authors I Wish Would Write Another Book (debut authors, authors who seem to have taken a hiatus, OR for those who read classics authors you wish would have written another book before they passed)

1. Cassandra Clare author of The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices series:
We all know Cassie Clare does shadowhunters brilliantly. Beyond brilliantly. She has woven two fantastic series. She has a knack for interesting, yet extremely infuriating story lines. Fantastic characters with wonderful stories and witty dialogue. And, of course, swoonworthy young men -- Jace and Will.

Despite the fact that both series are centered on the shadowhunter world, they still manage to be very unique from each other and other books out there. Which makes me curious -- what else does Cassie Clare have for us? I am thinking I would love to have her write a dystopian or post-apocalyptic story. And nobody said it couldn't also be about shadowhunters. We have the past (TID) -- we have the present (TMI) -- what lies in the future for Cassie Clare (tbd)?

2. J.K Rowling author of Harry Potter:
Seven books of pure genius. As creator of one of the greatest, most gripping, and magical worlds of make believe, J.K. Rowling has no need to write anything else. But with an imagination like that, I can't help but wonder what else she could write. I know one thing for sure, I would read it in a heart-beat.

3. Kiersten White author of Paranormalcy Trilogy:
I love Kiersten White. I follow her on both her blog and twitter. She always has the cutest and funniest things to say. I think her writing is equally adorable and brilliant. I know she has several projects on the horizon, and I am incredibly excited for them. Though her Paranormalcy series is not my favorite, I have this feeling that someday, a book written by her will be.

4. Suzanne Collins author of The Hunger Games Trilogy:
I think it is fair to say that Suzanne Collins made people realize that dystopian books are AWESOME. That is not to say she is the first to have ever written one but since this series blew up, so has the dystopian trend. And, I am so grateful. I love reading about our world set in the future. A world that could be. And I loved the world that Suzanne Collins created. It takes a skilled writer to design a book around the glorification of killing without glorifying killing. She did it well. She did it with a gallon of emotion. And because of that, I would read anything else she has to write.

5. Jane Austen author of Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, and others:
Admittedly, I have not read much Jane Austen. Which perhaps then I shouldn't really be requesting more books from her... But, I love her stories. What I would love, is for Jane Austen, creator of the best heroines and snarkiest men, to live during our time. I would love for her to write in our day and age so that I could make it through more than one page without getting hung up on the old language. Alas, all we have is what she has already given us. And that is enough, because from there, so many adorable romances have been created.

6. Becca Fitzpatrick author of the Hush, Hush Saga
How about the story of why Patch fell the first time?

7. Carrie Ryan author of The Forest of Hands and Teeth
Maybe something a little more uplifting and with a lot less decaying but with equal amounts of heart-wrenching and exciting.

8. Ally Condie author of Matched Trilogy
I love her beautiful and simple writing. I can't wait for what else she has to offer.

9. Rachel Hawkins author of Hex Hall Series
I love, love, love Hex Hall, and it is about witches and demons. Which means, Rachel Hawkins could write about office supplies and I would probably love it.

Copout! I cannot decide on number ten. There are so many debut authors out there just getting their feet on the ground, and I am eagerly awaiting what they all have in store for the future.

New year, New goals, New dreams

2012 is officially underway.

I am back to Chicago, back to work, and back to life.

The constant nagging at the back of my brain has returned, reminding me that I still need to figure out what I want to do with the rest of my life. It is like a buzz in a crowded hallway. It is easy to pretend that it isn't there. At least until that sudden silence that lasts only one-second but is one-second long enough for me to hear the buzz again, begging me to turn up the volume to hear it all the way. I am afraid if I do, I will have to face reality. Which means, I will have to face the future.

The future.

Future, such a loaded and daunting word.

With the onslaught of Dystopian novels out these days, it seems I am constantly reading books about the future. A society where kids are forced to fight to the death in an arena to prove a point to the citizens that the capitol is in control (The Hunger Games). A society where love is deemed a disease with fates as bad as death (Delirium). A society where people don't even have futures as their lives end in their twenties (Wither).

It makes me think about the world we do live in. A world where the word future may seem daunting, but at least it is a choice that we get to make.

It is a choice that I can't keep storing in my sock drawer. Eventually--sooner rather than later--I am going to have decide...what am I going to do with my life? It is times like these that I almost wish I could be given a microcard with a name and data on it telling me this is my match; this is my future (Matched). Or take an aptitude test that says, this is where you belong (Divergent).

Alas, my world is one where freedom of choice is practically printed on our dollar bill.

What am I going to do with mine?

This is the major question that I am setting out to answer this year.

And while I'm trying to answer the biggest question of my life, I will also be working on several other things.

My writing (pic source), of course. I have had a slow month, but it is never far from my mind. Writing is both an adventure and a medium for expression. When I don't write consistently, all of those emotions inside of me get bundled into a very jumbled slinky. I need to let them out. And hopefully that means letting them out in the form of a novel. A real one with a beginning, middle, and end. And some pretty crazy moments in between.

Cleaning. Now, I am not known for my tidiness. However, a clean home makes for a productive life. I am going to start with the scum on the shower. The scum isn't my fault. But that of a very old, rundown apartment. However, I can take responsibility to manage it. Cleaning is not only about removing the shower scum but cleaning out the clutter. Making space for change.

Reading. I love YA books. I really, truly do. And there is nothing wrong with reading hundreds of them. However, I realize that to enrich my mind and my writing, I am going to have to explore some of the other genres as well. Classics, non-fiction (yuck), and Game of Thrones by George R.R Martin (because I love the show and am curious if the books are any good). And then of course read every YA book I can possibly fit into the minimal areas of free time in my life.

Getting involved. I want to attend book signings and other types of events for readers and writers. My friends have finally started reading The Hunger Games (seriously, they are way behind) and we are going to start a book club. They already hear all of my ramblings on the books I read, but it will be fun to actually have two way dialogue on books. And since we all have vastly different interests, this will help me expand that comfort zone. Then get them to read some of the books that I oh so adore. (pic source)

Anyway, that is a lot to fill in a twenty-four hour day. But, I will strive to manage it. I will make that choice to live my life to the fullest with each day. Doing the things that I love.

And as I go about living in my present, hopefully, I will figure out my future.

With all of the praise and fantastic reviews floating around on this book, you would have to be living on a remote island in a box to have not heard about it. Everything I've read has placed this pick in a glowing light. One month -- I cannot wait!

Top Ten Books I am excited to read in 2012

One of the best and worst trends in the YA writing world is the series -- it is the best because once you reach the last page, there is more story yet to come. It is the worst because there is more story yet to come and all you can do is wait...wait, wait, wait. Wait for more of the wonderful characters. Wait for more of the invigorating plot. And wait for more of the beautiful writing.

They are worth waiting for. And now that another year has begun, the countdown to the next installments in some of my favorite series has begun.

1. Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver: Book birthday - February 28

If you have read Delirium, you know that the book ended infuriatingly. Horrible, torturesome cliffhanger. I need more. Stat. And thanks to Emily over at As the Crowe Flies (and Reads), I will get to read this early!

2. Spellbound by Rachel Hawkins: Book birthday - March 13

When I first read Hex Hall, I had no idea of the adventure I was in store for. These covers didn't grab me, but now that I know how adorable, funny, and exciting the books are, I find them great. This is probably the book I am most excited for. I just love Sophie Mercer. And I just love Archer Cross even more!

3. The Golden Lily by Richelle Mead: Book birthday - June 19

Adrian Ivashkov. Enough said.

4. City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare: Book birthday - May 8

Come on Cassie Clare. Stop writing books that I want to read! And stop making them so - good. City of Fallen Angels ended with a bang. I am literally crawling out of my skin excited to read the next one. More Jace -- that could never be a bad thing.

5. Fever by Lauren DeStefano: Book birthday - February 21

I enjoyed Wither. I wouldn't say it was my favorite book of the year, but it definitely held my interest. Then ended right when things were getting really, really good.

6. Rapture by Lauren Kate: Book birthday - June 12

This series took a reread to get me hooked. Yes, I disliked it the first time, yet still read it again. Don't ask why. All I know was that was a very good decision. I am completely hooked to the love story of Luce and Daniel. What is going to happen? Can true love win over all?

7. Untitled (Hush, Hush book # 4) by Becca Fitzpatrick: Book birthday - October

This series was supposed to end with Silence. Boy am I glad that it didn't. Patch. Patch. Patch. Thank goodness there is more of him to look forward to!

8. Untitled (Matched book # 3) by Ally Condie: Book birthday - November 13

Cassia, Ky, Xander. A dystopian world. I am preparing my heart already for an emotional roller coaster.

9. Insurgent by Veronica Roth: Book birthday - May 1

Divergent ends with such an unforeseen twist. Meaning, I have no clue where we are going to go from here. And I love it. Can't wait to return to Roth's dystopian society.

10. Endlessly by Kiersten White: Book birthday - July 24

This series is just so fun. Sometimes serious. But mostly fun. What I love is (as the first title - Paranormalcy - implies) how normal the story is despite all of the paranormal. Evie seems like she could be my best friend. And Lend is such a boy next door. Love them all.

and one vote for a non-series but companion story (so it can be # 11)

11. Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins: Book birthday Fall 2012

I don't know much about this book. What I do know is that Stephanie Perkins is the author. And I absolutely love anything Stephanie Perkins writes. Ergo, I am highly anticipating this book later in the year.

The good news -- this is just a list of my top ten. There are so many other books already published and soon to be published that I also have to read. So though I might have to wait months for some of these, I won't be idly twiddling my thumbs waiting. I will be on another great book adventure.

Welcome to the last day of 2011. I have a long list of resolutions that I won't bore you with but here are those that include book/writing related goals.

Read 100+ books (at least 10 not of the YA genre -- eek)
Finish writing at least one of my own books!
Blog 5 times a week.
Teach Baby Bear (the little ruffian I nanny) how to read. Or at least get her potty trained.
Take another writing class.
Improve my grammar (Roommate Cousin -- I will need your help on this).
Visit Diagon Alley, discover the wardrobe to Narnia, meet a paranormal boy or discover I myself am supernatural.
